After playing TLK and KnC for more than 12 years I had a few ideas that I thought would add more strategy and fun into the game.
Banking:
Each country should have a bank where players could deposit and withdraw money. These banks would be in only large cities.
Plus these banks pay out interest. The interest rate is set at base 10% at start of age but after every million gold deposited it drops by 0.1% to a min of 0.1%. For every deposit or withdrawal the player is taxed flat 5% of the amount. The interest is payed into your account as follows.
e.g. At D1 end suppose 5 million gold has been deposited into the country bank which means interest rate would be 9.5%. Now I have 100k gold in the bank at end of D1; I'll get 9500 gold into my account over the course of 48 ticks of D2. So I get 9500/48 = 198 gold per tick in my account.
Another thing regarding gold I wanted to suggest is the transfer of gold b/w players to help in FH.
Special Units:
Friends who've had played KnC may remember they had drummers and medics that affected leadership and healing. So I suggest adding same units like drummer/standard bearer for increasing leadership and medic/priest for healing. These units will not have evolution and be expensive like 100-150 auth each. They will also not be killed or captured or injured as they won't fight. But they'll add a whole new layer of strategy into the game imo.

How would you control the money transfer of the bank?
The special units of knc are replaced by heroes in tlk.

How do you prevent 1 player from making withdrawals every second meaning nobody else can take the money in the bank? Someone salty for example
