Help from Flemish and Dutch university students asked!

Postby polle » Thu Nov 26, 2009 4:15 pm

Hello

I would like to ask the Flemish and Ducth university students for some help.
I'm currently working on my thesis, a study of Idiomatic expressions in Dutch.
We would like to see if the Dutch speaking part of Belgium uses a different idiomatic lexicon than speakers of Dutch in the Netherlands (as is suggested by the Van Dale idiomatic dictionary).

So if you're a Dutch or Flemish university student, please don't hesitate to fill in the questionnaire and to pass it on to your fellow students. I won't take more than a minute or two.

Thank you.

Filled it in.

Will you let us know the results of your research when you're done?

I wouldn't be too surprised if the "if the Dutch speaking part of Belgium uses a different idiomatic lexicon than speakers of Dutch in the Netherlands" question gets a yes... lots of past miscommunications have convinced me of that.

done.

I'd say Polle is Dutch btw

possible answer: 'niet met zich laten sollen'. Sollen? I don't think I ever used it, its typical Dutch from the Netherlands ^^

(I use all those expressions myself btw.. so if some were typical dutchy dutch, I'd be surprised)

First of all, thanks to everyone here who took the time to complete the questionnaire.

For those who are interested:

The study focussed on idiomatic expressions which van Dale considered to be "Belgisch-Nederlands".

So we wanted to see if these expressions where commonly known throughout the different provinces in Belgium. And if they really were part of our lexicon then most Belgians would consider these expressions to be AN or close to it.

The Dutch students formed our controle group. We expected the difference between the two groups regarding meaning to be relatively small, which it was.
The difference regarding whether or not it could be considered AN was more significant.

correct meaning: Flemish students: 93% vs Dutch students 84%
considered AN: Flemish students: 72% vs Dutch students 31%

So we can conclude that these expressions are well known throughout the Dutch speaking community but are definitely more used in Belgium than in the Netherlands.

(This is a very very brief outline of what the paper was about)

All known to you, yeah... that should give you a clue! :P

(Wanted to wait with that until the 'research' was over.)

@results: Nice, but not incredibly surprising. I guess Van Dale turns out to know what they're talking about. ;)
